Cuban “Fahrenheit” broadcast no Oscar spoiler
Funny how it wasn’t a pirate copy until now.
The U.S. distributors of Michael Moore’s controversial “Fahrenheit 9/11” have said an unauthorised broadcast of the film on Cuban television will not disqualify the movie from Oscar competition in the feature documentary category.
“The film that was illegally shown on Cuban state-run TV was from an unauthorised, pirated copy,” said a statement on Tuesday issued by Lions Gate Films, IFC Entertainment and the Fellowship Adventure Group, founded by Miramax Films co-chairs Bob and Harvey Weinstein.
Interesting how all of a sudden, now that the specter of disqualification is raised, here comes the hit squad saying this is a pirate copy. Where was the statement a week ago when this Cuban story broke?
So what, Fidel hit up Kazaa and threw that shitty, horrible sounding copy on broadcast TV? With a chunk missing?
Yeah, right. If you believe that, then I have a bridge to sell you. I’ll tell you what I believe happened. Someone was too damn stupid to check the regs, and they gave a copy to Cuban state TV without thinking about it. I’ll bet there’s a shipping record somewhere, but we’ll never see it. Or it’s buried in the prints that went over for the theaters. 100 theaters, 101 prints. Or maybe they just never gave a fuck about the rules because they knew they could always claim it was a bootleg. What can we do, call Castro and ask? Do *you* know anyone with contacts at Cuban state television?
I wish someone who worked for Harvey or Mike had a conscience and would take a stand.
Once again, Moore gets away with it right in front of everyone and has plausible deniability.
